  1. Kurt, could you comment on your thoughts of the Orion ED80 and the moonlite focuser. I am looking at possibly purchasing this setup and was wondering how easy it was to attach the focuser to the Orion tube.

    Thanks,
    Mike

  2. Hi Mike,
If you get the Orion ED80 as a package with, lets say, the Sirius mount, it is a really good deal. I have been very happy with the telescope especially with the addition of the Moonlite focuser and reducer. I spent about $450 on the telescope and about $275 on the focuser. For that price you could might be able to get a triplet that has a dual speed focuser already attached (Astrotech, Explore Scientific).

That being said, this telescope is very durable, portable, and produces pretty good images. I do give this a favorable recommendation.

I highly recommend the Moonlite focuser. It is very easy to attach, just remove the three screws holding the stock focuser and attach the Moonlite focuser. They are a very customer oriented company. I had a problem after about 6 months or so and they just sent another one no questions or anything. You actually speak with the owners.

One other thing, the scope is f/7.5, I purchased a a reducer which also helped a great deal with imaging as it lowered it to f/6.3.

Good luck, whatever you get, it is the right decision. Cheers Kurt

    1. That's what I was thinking. I was looking at the iOptron CEM25P mount, but Orion currently has a deal on the Sirius and ED80 as a package. The ED80 ends up coming to around $300, and it includes mounting rings for the ED80. I think that will be the way to go and upgrade to the moonlite focuser in the future.

  3. Yeah, that's the best way to get this scope. Cheers Kurt

  6. Hi

    Enjoy your videos.

I have a Skyrover 115mm APO refractor, FL 805mm F7, there is a guy selling a reducer flattener here in Australia for roughly US$450.

    https://www.astronomyalive.com.au/product/sky-rover-0-8x-reducer-flattener/

He says it is Skyrover specific, but looking at other 115mm telescopes they look like they all come out of the same factory.

    https://www.astronomyalive.com.au/product/sky-rover-ult-115-ed-glass-triplet-115mm-apo-refractor-telescope/

I've been looking at this Reducer / Flattenerand it looks like it is for 115mm refractor

    https://www.astronomics.com/astro-tech-0-8x-reducer-field-flattener-for-astro-tech-at115edt-triplet-apo-refractor.html

If you have time, what are your thoughts on these reducers / Flatteners?

    Kind regards
